Puffy Mattress – Our Complete Review

Puffy offers two different models of their award-winning memory foam mattress: the Puffy and the Puffy Lux. The standard Puffy is a three-layer 10″ memory foam mattress that has a polyfoam support core that is designed to provide support and balance. The Puffy Lux is a 12″ four-layer mattress that gives all of the same features as the regular Puffy but with an extra layer of “Body Adapting Dual Cloud Foam”.

The two big takeaways from our review of the Puffy mattresses is that pressure relief and conforming to your body shape were the biggest benefits. The only major drawback we found was that it had weak edge support, which can reduce the longevity of your mattress.
What type of sleeper should use the Puffy Mattress?

After extensive testing and feedback from real customers, we’ve determined that the Puffy is best suited for side sleepers. It’s also best for sleepers who are average weight or lower. We found that for sleepers who are well above average weight (weighing more than 220 lbs), the memory foam did not provide enough support. But for the vast majority of people, this mattress will provide the perfect balance of support and softness.

You should buy the Puffy Mattress if you:

Enjoy the feeling of sleeping on memory foam
Want an affordable memory foam mattress
Sleep with a partner and wake up easily from movement
Live somewhere that has extreme differences in weather between seasons
Are average weight or lower

Features of the Puffy Mattress

First, the basics. The Puffy is 100% manufactured in the USA, meaning that it is required to conform to stringent health and safety standards. At Sleepline we almost always recommend that you purchase a mattress that was made in either the United States or Canada for that specific reason.

The Puffy is available at a very generous price level: prices start at $495 for a twin Puffy and increase as the size increases. The Puffy Luxe starts at $1145. Puffy also offers a lifetime warranty that is designed to protect you in case of a manufacturer’s defect. This is much more generous than the industry standard 10-year warranty.

You’ll also get a 101 night free trial. If you’re not completely satisfied, they’ll refund your order with free return shipping. Since this mattress isn’t available for in-store purchase, this definitely removes some of the risk associated with buying sight-unseen.

Puffy has also been Certi-Pur certified. This rigorous certification ensures that the mattress was manufactured without the use of harmful, toxic chemicals that can damage your health.

Now that we’ve got the basics out of the way, let’s take an in-depth look at the key features of the Puffy.

Firmness

Puffy manufactures their mattresses with a medium firmness. This level of firmness should be extremely comfortable for the vast majority of sleepers who don’t have a specific preference.

This mattress is most ideal for side sleepers, since the memory foam adjusts to accommodate the curves of your body. But since it has a medium level of firmness, it provides adequate support for stomach and back sleepers as well. If you sleep with a partner who sleeps in a different position and you don’t want to be disturbed by their movement, this mattress is great for you.

Although most stomach and side sleepers will find that the Puffy provides more than enough support, a small minority will want an even firmer mattress. In that case, you should definitely take advantage of Puffy’s 101-night money back guarantee.
Durability

Since Puffy is a premium mattress, the manufacturer has taken great care to use high-quality components when constructing this mattress. Of course, using high-quality materials helps to extend the lifespan of your mattress. The lower layer of the mattress is designed to help provide support, helping it maintain its shape over time.

Some customers have noted that the Puffy doesn’t have the best edge support. Strong edge support is one of the key factors that extends the lifespan of a mattress, so this could be a strike against the Puffy.

It’s important to note that we haven’t received any reports of the mattress falling apart early. So at this point, the weak edge support being a negative is just theoretical. All customers report that their Puffy is doing just fine throughout its lifespan.

We estimate that a Puffy mattress will last an average of 15 years of normal use. The mattress does have a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects.
Construction

Puffy constructs their mattresses with the goal of contouring to your body shape, giving you adequate support and comfort. The standard Puffy mattress is 10 inches thick, while the Puffy Luxe model is 12 inches. Both models should provide more than enough support for almost any body type.

The interior of the mattress contains two layers of foam. The first layer consists of 3 inches of gel foam. Gel foam is very good at transferring body heat away, helping you stay cool while you sleep. Maintaining a cool temperature is one of the most important aspects of sleep hygiene, the best practices that you should follow to get a night of high quality sleep.

The layer of gel foam is also designed to contour to the shape of your body while simultaneously providing support. This helps to take pressure off of your sore joints and aching back.

Underneath the layer of gel foam is an additional layer consisting of 7 inches of high density foam. This layer is designed to provide structural support to the gel layer. It also helps support your spine and accommodate a variety of sleeping styles.

Temperature control

As previously mentioned, maintaining a cool temperature is extremely critical if you want to get a night of high quality sleep. Therefore, the ability of a mattress to wick away body heat is one of the key factors that you should evaluate when choosing which one to purchase.

We’re pleased to report that the Puffy does a phenomenal job of pushing away heat and keeping your body temperature nice and cool while you sleep. The 3-inch top layer of gel foam is responsible for dissipating the heat away from your body throughout the night.

Since the gel contours to the shape of your body without allowing you to sink in too deeply, it prevents the heat from building up around your body and reducing the quality of your shuteye. The breathable cover of this mattress allows air to circulate freely and lets heat escape.

Bottom line: if you want to stay cool at night, the Puffy Mattress will help.
What sizes are available?

Puffy makes their mattress in all of the most common dimensions. The Puffy Mattress is available in the following sizes:

Twin
Twin XL
Double
Queen
King
California King

Each of these sizes follows the standard US measurements. You won’t need to purchase a new bed frame or specially-sized sheets. The Puffy is designed to fit on any type of frame or foundation (box springs, flat frames, slats, adjustable frames, the floor, etc.).
Pricing

The Puffy is manufactured to exacting specifications with high-quality materials. Surprisingly, the price doesn’t reflect that. Puffy manages to keep their mattresses extremely affordable.

How much does a Puffy Mattress cost?

Twin ($495/$1,145 Lux)
Twin XL ($525/$1,195 Lux)
Full ($695/$1,295 Lux)
Queen ($850/$1,495 Lux)
King ($1,050/$1,695 Lux)
California King ($1,050/$1,605 Lux)

Warranty

Puffy offers a generous lifetime warranty on all of their mattresses. This warranty really is a standout feature, since the industry standard is only 10 years. The warranty is limited to manufacture defects that occurred during the construction of the mattress and you are covered for as long as you own it.

So how does the warranty actually work in practice? Is the company difficult to work with or do they actually live up to their promises?

If you notice the fault within the first 10 years of owning your mattress Puffy will simply replace it. Once 10 years has elapsed, Puffy will attempt to repair your mattress. If repair isn’t feasible they will send out a replacement.

You will have to pay an upfront $50 shipping fee to return your mattress to Puffy. The company will refund that fee if they determine that there is in fact a manufacturing defect.

Manufacturing faults that are covered by Puffy’s warranty include (but are not limited to):

Indentation in the mattress exceeding an inch-and-a-half
Defects in the cover
Zip fastener malfunction

Trial period

Puffy offers a 101-night sleep trial for all of their mattresses. This trial period is standard within the industry. It’s not the most generous but definitely not the worst either.

You can return your mattress with no questions asked at any point during the first 101 nights after purchase. You’ll receive 100% of your money back and you can return it for any reason or even no reason at all. So if you decide to buy a Puffy Mattress and eventually realize that it isn’t quite as comfortable as you thought it would be, simply contact the company.

Once you notify Puffy that you want to return your mattress, they will arrange free collection and shipping. You won’t have to spend a single cent when returning the mattress if you aren’t happy with it during the trial period.

It’s important to note that you can only take advantage of this offer if you buy your mattress directly from Puffy’s website. Puffy will only honor the free trial period for the original purchaser. If for some reason you decide to sell your mattress during the first 101 nights after buying it, the new purchaser will not be covered by the free trial offer.

You can rest easy knowing that your returned mattress won’t be dumped in a landfill somewhere. Puffy donates all returned mattresses to worthy causes, so you’ll be helping someone who can’t afford it gain access to a high quality mattress.

Care and maintenance

It’s always important to care for your mattress if you want to extend its lifespan. Fortunately, Puffy makes their mattresses extremely easy to maintain.

If you spill or stain your mattress, you can spot clean it the same way you would any other mattress. If the stain is large, you can remove the cover and wash it in a machine.

You definitely shouldn’t flip your Puffy mattress, since it’s designed to be slept on only one side. We do recommend rotating your mattress (flipping it so the head end becomes the foot end) a few times per year so you don’t put too much pressure on one end of the mattress. This will make sure that your mattress lasts as long as possible.
